As soon as “Big Box” retailers, like Wal-Mart and Costco, began encouraging private label vendors to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices for packaging, Olympus turned to SouthPack for solutions.

The immediate goal was to streamline packaging by reducing size and materials wherever possible, as well as to replace PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastics with the more earth-friendly PET—an inexpensive, lightweight, and recyclable material.

trap blister card SouthPack’s expert consultation—from design to delivery—helped Olympus realize this vision when its digital voice recorder product line hit the shelves of Wal-Mart in early 2007.

The following year, Olympus looked to SouthPack again for fresh, eco-friendly packaging ideas to launch a new line of memory cards to be sold at Sam’s Club. Taking it to the next level, SouthPack designed a reinforced trap blister card that is 100% recyclable and features a small blister made entirely from recycled PET. Best of all, because the blister is not sealed to the board, it’s quick and easy to separate for recycling—making customers more likely to keep the eco-friendly cycle going.

With the team on a roll, Olympus partnered with SouthPack a third time to rethink its digital camera packaging for Costco. Designing and producing a 100% recyclable trap blister card—reinforced to securely house and protect the camera and all additional components in one, streamlined package—SouthPack delivered yet another innovative solution that is as cost-effective as it is environmentally conscious.
